Chris Jones

VP & Chief Analyst

Chris Jones was one of the three founders of Canalys and is based in the Reading office, UK. Chris leads the Intelligent Vehicle Service globally, which he established during his many years based in Palo Alto at the Canalys Americas office. The service is the only one in the market to focus on identifying which features – or combination or group of features (driver assistance, connectivity, convenience and safety) sell in the different vehicle models, on a quarterly basis. It tracks the evolution toward greater mobility integration, electric vehicles and ultimately fully autonomous vehicles. Chris leads a global team of analysts providing ongoing analysis of this highly dynamic and geographically diverse market.

Chris has always led new Canalys research into emerging technologies. In 2013, Chris initiated Canalys’ research into wearable technology. Again, Canalys produced the industry’s first quarterly shipment tracking and analysis service in this segment. Wearable Technology Analysis has become the recognized source of market intelligence in the wearables industry.

In 2003, Chris initiated Canalys’ research into location-based services (LBSs), with the successful Mobile Navigation Analysis services. Canalys produced the industry’s first quarterly shipment tracking and analysis service in this segment, which also became the recognized source of market intelligence in the LBS industry.

In 2000, Chris pioneered market-specific analysis around smartphones, helping Canalys to become the leading global provider and standard source of data and analysis for these devices. Canalys' Smartphone Analysis services – renowned for their quality, consistency, clear device segmentation, timeliness and respected team of analysts – continue to add customer value by regularly increasing the depth and breadth of the research covered.

Chris has given keynote speeches and moderated sessions at many industry conferences and has worked on numerous consultancy projects for Canalys clients over the years. He is regularly quoted in the influential business and trade press on mobility issues.

Before joining Canalys, Chris spent five years with Gartner, mainly within Dataquest’s European PC Group. His principal activities were to manage Dataquest’s quarterly PC market program in Europe, to lead its research into handheld computing and to represent Europe within Dataquest’s worldwide PC analysis efforts.
